Opening Day! Taking advantage of the new playing field!

Just like the opening day of baseball season, a new era has already been opening up in the distributor marketplace. Most everyone knows that the independent segment of the document management industry has overtaken the direct selling side in volume. However, until one looks at the larger picture, he/she may not realize the magnitude of the movement.

  • Moore/Wallace: hard to imagine that these stalwart names will be fading from our industry
  • Duplex: long gone despite having a great sales force
  • Uarco: the label manufacturing king has been swallowed up
  • Reynolds & Reynolds: divided and sporting a confusing name
  • Standard Register: firing customers and shrinking
  • a whole host of regional directs are gone
  • and the list goes on

What does that mean for the independent distributor?

  • End users are concerned and looking for stability.
  • Large companies don't know who they can trust to be around.
  • Long time sales reps are gone and being replaced with rookies, if at all.

It's a new season - take advantage of the new playing field.

  • Dig deep, find problem areas, and provide solutions.
  • Target larger accounts.
  • Look for opportunities to promote, or develop new products.
  • Align with a manufacturer who has e-commerce.
  • Partner with manufacturers large enough to give credibility.
  • Invest in experienced sales reps looking for more opportunity.

Now is the time to step up to the plate and play a new season.

Best of luck and let us help you hit the next homerun!

Quick$hots

Early in the year we started a weekly coffee program every Wednesday morning on various sales topics. We've had some great conversations with various distributors around the country. Over the next few months I will give you a review of some of the networking sessions. For a list of upcoming Coffee's and the topics, visit our Schedule of Events calendar.

Sales Planning - What are you going to do in 2004?

This topic was the kick off session of our 2004 Coffee with Ward/Kraft program. The purpose was to allow distributors to analyze their sales planning tactics. Follow this link to read more about this session.

WK Coffee Rave Reviews

It was pleasure participating in the "Thinking like an Ad Agency" teleconference. As I mentioned, I am quite new to the sales arena, and the information shared was extremely valuable to not only a "newbie" like myself, but also for the veterans that participated. I found your information about finding out ways to increase a client's customer base and the advantages of having measurable results particularly helpful. Your insight into how to handle a customer that thinks the program or product purchased was bad, when in fact it produced the results requested, was right on the money. Thank you again for a great conference. I am looking forward to participating in more!

WK Attends DMIA
Small Distributor Summit

Ward/Kraft recently attended the first DMIA sponsored Small Distributor Summit in Kansas City. We were one of the five manufacturers invited to attend and give a presentation. Mike West, National Sales Manager of our Label Divisions, Debbie Buck, Sales Representative in our Label Division, and myself attended the three day meeting where we had time to network with the 49 attending distributors during breakfast, meetings, lunch, and dinner. Coincidentally, two of the presenting manufacturers (Printegra and Team Dispatch) are also clients of Ward/Kraft. Ray Mauck, Order Entry/Customer Service in our Label Division, made a special appearance per the request of Jerry Ballone with Computer Business Forms, one of Ward/Kraft's distributors.

Tradeshow and Conference

Many of our new products lean towards the direct marketing and promotional side of our industry. As you are aware, we now produce commercial printing in several divisions: digital labels, plastic cards, and promotional products. Many of these products require us to look at distribution channels other than our traditional distributor base. For this reason we joined the Kansas City Direct Marketing Association. We recently attended their annual conference and exhibit in Kansas City, which was attended by approximately 140 ad agencies and graphic design companies. Though our booth activity was low, I do feel this provided us good insight into how we must begin marketing to this group.
